In this one-day course, taught by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., author of Power from the Sun and The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, students will learn how to learn how to perform assessments on residential buildings to determine their suitability for photovoltaic (solar electric) systems.

Topics include:

  • Assess a residential location for a solar electric system
  • Determine the type of system that best suits the client or situation
  • Learn how to use solar site assessment software and tools, including Solar Pathfinder and Solar Pathfinder Assistant
  • Determine the best location for a PV array
  • Provide clients with basic information on the size and type of system they will require
  • How to determine electrical load
  • How to trim electrical load
  • How to size a grid-connected system
  • How to size an off-grid system and battery bank
  • How to estimate array output
  • How to write a site assessment report

Students will also receive an explanation of how to become a certified MREA Residential PV Site Assessor. This training, along with the Introduction to Residential Photovoltaics course, meets the classroom training requirements for this certification. Additional requirements include passing a PV Site Assessor written exam, performing practice assessments, completing required paperwork, and paying certification fees.
