In this two-day course, taught by Dan Chiras, Ph.D., author of Power from the Sun and The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, students will explore in detail residential and small business solar electric systems. This course will greatly expand on the topics covered in the introductory course.

Topics include:

  • Key electrical concepts
  • The pros and cons of solar electric systems
  • Solar irradiance, irradiation, incident angle, azimuth angle, and altitude angle
  • How solar cells work
  • Types of solar cells and how solar cells are made
  • Energy payback of solar electric systems
  • Advances in PV technology
  • Off-grid, grid-connected, and grid-connected with battery backup
  • Components of solar electric systems
  • Basic solar site assessment
  • Hybrid solar and wind systems
  • Roof and ground mounted racks, poles, and trackers
  • Tracker options
  • The pros can cons of trackers
  • Battery chemistry, types of batteries, and battery maintenance
  • How inverters work and types of inverters
  • How charge controllers work
  • The economics of solar electric systems
  • Permits and interconnection agreements
  • Insurance requirements.

Students will also be treated to slide shows on the installation of several PV systems. Students will spend some time in class each day applying what they’ve learned. You’ll learn to assess electrical demand, calculate system size, calculate wire requirements, assess a solar site, and determine the best site for a PV system
